Class Description

Instruction during the 4 years spent in the youth program core class focuses on accurate, realistic drawing. Concepts constantly covered include negative space, perspective, color, contour, measuring, value, creating depth, shadow, composition. All students work to their own ability and level of accomplishment, with more complicated subject matter and techniques added as student knowledge and ability increases. Accurate, realistic drawing of simple forms, still life objects or plaster casts is encouraged as much as possible in either pencil or charcoal. Working with pastels and watercolor is also included to maintain student interest. As student competence grows, grisaille oil painting, and later, oil painting in color is added to a lesson. Classes are kept in a light mood, so that children want to attend and have fun while learning to build their artistic skills.
