Mark Hiles was raised and resides in the Baltimore
area. He works in oils, watercolors and pastels. He has also been
trained in anatomy and sculpture. His works display realistic images
of landscapes, people and still-life subject matter.
Citing Andrew Wyeth and John Singer Sargent as
influences, he captures the scenes and figures in a careful and
confident manner. Light and mood are factors that attract the artist.
He states the "lighting and mood are usually what attracts me. Whether
it is a landscape immersed in rain and fog or a brightly lit portrait
model, the lighting and mood are what drives my interest in the
subject matter". He stresses pictorial composition in the arrangement
of the subject and in the use of the medium.
Many private collectors and corporations own
and enjoy his works. The artist's association with local galleries
continues to bring him wider recognition.
